YOUNGSTERS are being warned boredom is banned this summer as the council launches a packed series of events and activities to keep children busy until September.

Children’s centres, leisure centres, libraries and community centres across the borough, as well as Reading Museum, will all be hosting a range of ways to keep youngsters busy while school is out.

The planned programme for those 12 and under includes making a fire-breathing dragon with the libraries and educational sessions being put on by Reading Museum, bringing light to the town’s involvement in the First World War.

Reading’s children’s services leader, Cllr Jan Gavin, said: “I’m delighted that we can once again offer such a wide range of activities for younger children to enjoy over the summer school holiday.

“I’m sure all the inexpensive, fun activities that we have organised for 0 to 12-year-olds will help Reading children –

and their parents – have a great summer.”

Reading’s Play Rangers, a group which encourages children to get out and make the most of outdoor spaces and play areas, will be putting on play days in parks across the borough.

Back at the museum there will be a chance to explore the history of Reading-based biscuit firm Huntley & Palmers, as well as a chance to have a go at making tasty treats.

Summer holiday playclubs, offering a mix of sporting and fun activities, will also be available at three locations across Reading: Green Park, Highdown and Waterloo Meadows.

A booklet will be given out through primary schools, nurseries and children’s centres detailing times and locations. More information can be found at www.readingplay.co.uk.

A selection of events for those aged 13-19 can also be found online at www.readingyouth.com.
