THE “biggest job fair in town” which aims to match up jobseekers with vacancies was officially launched last week.

Reading East MP Rob Wilson was joined by representatives from Jobcentre Plus and Reading UK CIC to launch the seventh jobs fair at Reading College on Friday, and is urging job hunters to put Wednesday, May 28, in their diaries.

Mr Wilson is pleased with the way the fair has grown and said: “I was told three years ago that a jobs fair couldn’t happen - that there were too may health and safety issues.

“I did the first one on a wing and a prayer, and with their help, like minded people came together.

“We have built this jobs fair bit by bit and now we have the biggest jobs fair in the area, and attracted 5,000 people last time.

“We had 50 businesses and we should have more this time. I would like to thank all the organisations who have supported us over the last three years.

“I’d like to add that we do this all for free. I had felt some of the job fairs that were out there were by recruitment agencies and middle men who weren’t giving young people the chance to get in front of employers.”

Reading College principal Lesley Donoghue told the Midweek she is looking forward to hosting the fair and added: “The sheer numbers that attend has really bowled me over. This fair connects people who are looking for jobs and those who can offer them.

“We will encourage people to come who are looking for a new career as we are all about progression.”

Those seeking a new direction can take up courses at the college’s Employment Shop, where John Turner and Ronnie Smith are currently taking the office environment course.

Both are hoping to find admin jobs and spoke to Mr Wilson about their career hopes.

Mr Turner said: “It’s great that somebody is here to give us feedback.”
