A SOCIAL housing organisation is looking for kind-hearted volunteers to support Reading’s homeless during icy winter nights.

Riverside is providing nine emergency beds to make sure rough sleepers do not freeze to death, but is now appealing for volunteers to help run its overnight services.

The group, based at Hamble Court in Southampton Street, is working with St Mungo’s, the Salvation Army, Launchpad Reading and the borough council to support homeless people.

Support team leader Rachel Irons stressed the services will not only benefit the homeless people but reduce pressure on A&E which always has to handle an increase in elderly and vulnerable patients during the winter.

She said: “Working with homeless people at Hamble Court we realise Riverside is in a unique position to help ease some of this burden and our team is providing a range of health-related support to the rough sleepers who come to us.”

Volunteers, who must be friendly with good communication skills, should contact Ms Irons on 0118 950 5551 or 07854 403 309.
