A YOUNG man was treated for hypothermia after he plunged into the Kennet and Avon Canal in the early hours.

The victim, believed to be in his early 20s, was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital at 2.30am today after crews from Wokingham Road fire station pulled him from the water at King's Road close to the Prudential offices.

A passer-by raised the alarm after spotting the man, who was believed to be intoxicated, clinging to the edge.

Crews from the Caversham Road water rescue team eventually called off their search for the man's friend, also thought to be in the water, who was later found safe at home.
