A PETROL station has been closed while police investigate the theft of a "large amount" of fuel from its underground tanks.

Police were called to the station at Sainsbury's in Ringmead, Birch Hill at 4.19am today (Friday).

PCSO Mary Parker said: "We know there was a large amount of fuel taken. The vehicles haven't yet been indentified at this stage. The process of examining CCTV footage and coming to take statements is starting."

The petrol station is taped off for scene of crime officers to examine the forecourt for clues. It has not yet been confirmed what type of fuel was taken.

It is likely to be closed until at least lunchtime.
