SPORTING legends and household names descended on Sunningdale Golf Course to raise funds and awareness for a children's cancer charity.

The celebrity golf day, which has raised £26 million since it started 21 years ago, saw celebrities such as England footballing legend John Terry, Olympic Swimming champion Mark Foster, TV presenter Vernon Kay and Former England Football Manager Glenn Hoddle, taking part to raise thousands for CLIC Sargent.

As well as enjoying a round of golf, the guests also heard about the charity’s latest campaign to create a Young Cancer Patient Travel Fund during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and how the charity supports families who have to travel many miles for specialist treatment.

One of those included the family of five-year-old Heidi Watts, who has been supported by CLIC Sargent throughout her treatment for Leukaemia.

Mum Paula said: “I estimate that we have probably spent near to £1,000 on car parking costs alone and fuel costs going to and from hospital. I don’t know who would have picked us up if CLIC Sargent hadn’t been there- they held our hand from the very beginning."

John Terry said: “As a keen golfer, I really enjoyed the day but as a dad I was also honoured to be asked to play for such a worthwhile cause because it’s so important that CLIC Sargent can be there to give families the support they need.”

Vernon Kay, said: “I attended CLIC Sargent’s golf day last year and was thrilled to be asked again. I love coming out on this wonderful golf course, having fun and raising vital awareness and funds during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.”

Rachel Kirby-Rider, Director of Income and Engagement at CLIC Sargent, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many celebrities and our brilliant partners from the corporate come together to raise funds during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We can’t thank our generous hosts Sunningdale Golf Club and Tullow Oil, in their tenth year of sponsorship, enough for their continued support in our fight for young lives against cancer.”
