SLOUGH MP Tan Dhesi says he is 'disgusted' after one of his Sikh guests was attacked outside Parliament by a man who tried to pull off his turban.
Mr Dhesi said Ravneet Singh, 37, from India, who was in the UK to discuss environment issues, was standing outside Portcullis House in Westminster when the incident happened on Wednesday evening.
It is understood that Mr Singh's turban was almost completely pulled off before the man shouted 'Muslim go back home' at him. He had been waiting in the queue to meet Mr Dhesi.
Mr Dhesi said on Twitter: "Someone filled with hatred tried to pull off turban of my guest standing in queue outside @UKParliament & shout “Muslim go back home”.
"They don’t realise importance of #turban for Sikhs. We need to work collectively to counter hate crime that’s been on the rise in our country."
Separately in a video Mr Dhesi called on the Government to include protection for Sikhs in its Hate Crime Action Plan, which it currently ignores, he said.
