NEIL BAKER is pleased with how Slough Town have responded to a tough pre-season schedule after wins against Metropolitan Police and Uxbridge.

Slough beat Met. Police 2-1 at Arbour Park on Saturday before a 4-0 win at Uxbridge on Tuesday, leaving them unbeaten in five summer friendlies.

Rebels joint-manager Baker told the Observer: “I’m pleased with aspects of both games last week really.

“In the first-half of both games we started a little slow out the blocks and could not find that final ball.

“But, In the second-half the performances were very good and that has been the case all pre-season.

“There are a lot of positives to take and no real injuries other than Alan Inns, who should not be that far away from a return, so from that point of view fitness is good.

“Fitness wise we’re in a good position, we have a fit side, with a lot of options which is what you want as managers.

“We have a number of players that can start or not be in the 16 which gives us plenty to think about and tough decisions to make, but that’s what you want.”

Baker continued: “We’re still unbeaten, which I know doesn’t mean a lot in pre-season, but we are happy with it.

“When you play and you don’t lose it’s all good, especially against higher league sides, but we wanted to test the players.

“When we organised our pre-season we thought we would have a tough programme but the lads have come through it well so far.”

Slough welcome Premier League club West Bromwich Albion to the now-complete Arbour Park this Saturday (3pm) for the testimonial of long-serving physio, Kevin McGoldrick.

Baker said: “When I originally spoke with Dave Kemp (West Brom assistant manager) he said it would be a mix of the first team squad. West Brom have two matches that day so will split their first team squad, so to welcome Premier League players is fantastic for Slough Town.

“When Dave spoke with Tony Pulis (manager) it was agreed very quickly, within eight to 10 hours, which is quite surprising as when you deal with a Premier League club these things normally take time.

“If four or five first team players come it will be fantastic for the club and local committee. I hope we can get a very good attendance in. From the point of view of a parent, why would you not bring your child along?"

He added: "It will be a defensive exercise and not different to the situation with Wycombe Wanderers. We worked hard to hold them to a clean sheet and it will be no different on Saturday.

"We will have to work hard and, given the players we will have available, we will try to hurt them as well.

"We don't expect to be on the same level as West Brom but it will be a great occasion for the club."
