Pizza lovers suffered the full force of yesterday's storm when an electrical surge downed the ovens in a Wokingham Italian restaurant.

At around 9pm the ovens in the Pizza Express on Broad Street switched off.

It is unclear whether the restaurant itself was struck by lightning, causing a localised power outage as too many volts coursed through the building's electronics, or if a circuit was struck nearby.

Pizza Express worker Marius Rusu said: "The power just cut off for about an hour. Maybe an hour and a half.

"It came back on at about 10.30pm.

"Everything is fine now."

Elsewhere in Berkshire, fire crews were called to a school in Sonning Lane, Sonning, which was struck by a lightning bolt. There was no significant damage however.

Meanwhile in Woodley, firefighters had to douse a blaze in a garage after it caught alight.

A house in Oregon Avenue, Tilehurst, had to be evacuated after electricity surged down its aerial, blowing the sockets throughout the four-bedroomed property and sparking a fire in the loft.
