The Hurst Show and Country Fayre proved as popular as ever

The Hurst Show and Country Fayre proved as popular as ever this weekend as young and old galloped along to take part in the inaugural sporting event.

This year’s attendance swelled as families travelled for miles to take in the show and have a go at the hobby horse event.

Show chair Sue Payne said: “We were amazed at the turnout as more than 51 young people took part. The riders were very competitive and sporting.”

Among the winners were local entrants Olivia Turner, seven, who was joint second, and Emma Whitworth, eight, who was sixth, both from Hurst.

Olivia said: “I had a really great time. I can’t wait to do it again.”

The show was opened icy style by John Lawrence of Woodley, who played the Snow Queen in Hurst’s pantomime in January.

In his spectacular costume again, John performed a script written for the opening by Joe de Mounteney.

Meanwhile, the fun dog show in its third year had its most successful year with almost 200 entries.

Mrs Payne added: “The show was busy all weekend. We felt there was a big sense of community and family fun. Thank you to all our visitors and helpers who created that. We hope to have raised thousands of pounds again.

“Last year we supported 24 charities and other good causes including St Nicholas Primary School. The school’s parents, staff and children help the show in many ways.”
