A competitive fishing match has been organised to help raise funds for those effected by the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Phil Boultwood, from Bracknell, set up the angling match in the aim of raising money to help those who have lost homes and belongings.

79 people died last Monday when flames engulfed the apartment building in West London, and each victim was given a sum of £5,500 from the government from an emergency funding pot.

Mr Boultwood believes more can be done however, and explained why he felt compelled to take action to raise some money.

He said: "I didn't hear about the tragedy on Monday until late Monday morning, but one of my areas I work in is London, north of the river, so I have to get into London very early.

"On that day I was scheduled to go into London on the Monday morning, but an emergency repair came in and I got sidetracked. My wife phoned me up to ask if I'd heard and I didn't know what had happened.

"It wasn't until something popped up on my phone that I thought 'wow, this is serious'.

"The following day I had to pop into London to do Monday's job, and the route that I would normally take goes through shepherds bush and right past the tower, so I thought that's a no-go area.

"I went a different way and I just saw the tower standing there, it was just like a monument, I couldn't believe it.

"That evening I saw the news and there was a report about it, I just sat there and cried, thinking 'what a tragedy'. When it's so close to you and something you go past every day, it's almost like its a part of you.

"It was when I saw the tower I decided I wanted to do something. I got home and watched it on sky news and I was just shocked, completely shocked. I had to go back to London the day after and went past the tower and as soon as I saw it it brings a tear to your eye.

"Whatever your feelings are towards anyone, race or religion, nobody deserves their life taken like that, so I thought let's do something about it. Whatever we can do, we'll do."

The match will take place Sunday July 2 at 9am, entry to the competition costs £10, entrants should email braybrookecommunityclub@yahoo.co.uk, the match will be open to spectators who can donate on the day.
