THE patron saint of England was celebrated with a flying of the flag ceremony last Friday.

The event marking St George’s Day was led by mayor of Bracknell Forest Tony Virgo Cllr Tony Virgo, who was joined by deputy mayor, Cllr Tina McKenzie-Boyle.

The St George’s day flag was flown from Easthampstead House in Bracknell from Friday until Monday April 24.

St George’s Day celebrates the patron saint of England, who is said to protect the monarch and the people from peril.

According to legend, St George was a Roman soldier who slayed a dragon and saved a princess.

Cllr Tony Virgo said: “I am really delighted to celebrate our national day. St George was made the patron saint of England because of his ethics and honor, timeless qualities which mean he is revered throughout the country.”
