NEW harsher fines for speeding drivers come into force tomorrow.

Under the strict new legislation high speed offenders could be fined 150 per cent of their weekly income, the current threshold is 100 per cent.

Gary Rae campaigns director for road safety charity Brake said: "Toughening the fines and penalties for speeding is long overdue.

"As a charity that offers a support service to families bereaved and injured in road crashes, we see every day the consequences of speeding on our roads.

"I hope that magistrates ensure the new sentences are consistently applied."

Figures released by the Department for Transport show speeding was a contributory factor in nearly a quarter of road accidents in 2015, the last year figures are available for.

To qualify for the new harsher fines drivers need to be caught doing at least 41mph in a 20 zone, 51mph in a 30 or 66mph in a 40.

The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points.
