Slough have been celebrating this week after being crowned champions of the Middlesex, Berks, Bucks & Oxon Regional Two.

They were left flying high following their 3-2 win over British Airways on Saturday.

“I’m told this is the first title the men’s section have won in 13 years,” said proud team captain Lennart Bobzien. “We’ve been promoted before, but always as runners-up.”

Slough only just avoided relegation in 2015, but 12 months later they moved up to mid-table and that progression continued this season.

Bobzien commented: “With a new manager and coach on board, there have been a lot of changes to the team.”

Player-coach Ranjeev Deol was forced to return to Canada during the season, but had already done a lot of work with the squad.

“He had a huge influence on us winning the league and getting us promoted,” said Bobzien. “We’ve really stepped up this season and played good hockey.”

Slough also owed much to top scorer Bobbie Bansal, whose vital second-half goal on Saturday took his tally for the season to 30.

Slough led 2-1 at half-time, with both goals coming from Luke Beddos. They were set up by Kuli Matharu, who just a few weeks ago had suffered a hairline fracture in his jaw when involved in an accidental collision with the opposing keeper.

He made a brief comeback two weeks ago, coming off the bench to score in the 4-2 win over West Hampstead, but Matharu returned to the starting line-up for the game with British Airways.

Slough complete the season on Saturday, April 8 when they visit Banbury in a re-arranged fixture.
