A WORN down footpath is set to be resurfaced after a parish council secured funding from a grant scheme.

Burnham Parish Council has begun the resurfacing work on the path around Burnham Park Hall after it secured £12,000 as part of Tesco's Bags of Help scheme.

The council's bid was voted for the most out of three other projects earlier in the year, and work got underway on Wednesday.

Burnham based landscapers Country Connections will be carrying out the work, which will also see the path widened.

Parish Council clerk, Sheridan Edward, said: “The current path is narrow and rough, and a nightmare to use, especially in the wet. The new path will make it much easier for wheelchair and pushchair users, and encourage people to use the path for running and walking. Burnham Park is a great community asset that we want everyone to be able to enjoy.

"It is one of the things when I first started here last September. It is something that we wanted to do but then we saw that there was potentially money available from the scheme and we went for it.

"It was fantastic to be voted number one, and we are really happy that the £12,000 covers the cost of doing the work.

"We are hoping that it will kick start other aspects to refurbish the playground and revitalise the public parks.

"The path is very basic at the moment. It is not bad if you are fit and able, but as soon as it starts to rain people have to walk on the grass and there is not good enough for buggies and wheelchairs."

The project, which is expected to take a couple of weeks to complete, will make the path fit for walkers and runners, the elderly, disabled and families.

Bags of Help offers community groups and projects in each of Tesco’s 390 regions across the UK a share of revenue generated from the five pence charge levied on single-use carrier bags.
