A BURST water main will keep a busy road shut until at least tomorrow afternoon.

Wokingham Road had to be closed after a pipe running under it burst at 6.30 in the morning on Tuesday, April 26.

The pipe has now been repaired but the westbound carriageway between Downshire Road and Portman Close will remain closed until Thursday afternoon so a temporary surface can be laid.

Paul Mann, Distribution Manager at South East Water, said: "It took us longer to fix the pipe than we had initially anticipated because beneath the surface of the road we found 1.6 metres of concrete.

"Our repair teams had to dig through this concrete before they could reach the damaged section of pipe below.

"The pipe’s repair was completed on Tuesday evening and we are now returning the road back to its original state so it is safe for motorists to use."

A further closure is scheduled for Friday, May 6, so a permanent surface can be put in place.

Whilst technicians battled to fix the broken section of pipe redirected water around the town's network to ensure homes and businesses stayed connected during the work.

South East Water has spent £1.7 million upgrading the water pipe network across Bracknell.

The company is coming to the end of a nine month project to upgrade 3.7km of water main in Ringmead.

A two week project to install specialist meters which monitor the flow of water through the company’s water mains in Broad Lane and Ralph’s Ride gets underway on Monday May 9.

These meters monitor the pressure of water passing through the pipes, if there’s a dramatic change it could indicate a burst which the company can respond to quickly.
