AN IMMIGRATION raid in Sandhurst has seen two workers at an Indian restaurant arrested.

The Bangladeshi men are facing deportation and are being detained by the Home Office.

The Shenai Indian Restaurant on Yorktown Road was raided earlier this month and faces a possible bill of £40,000.

Home Office Immigration Enforcement officers swooped on the restaurant on Wednesday, April 13 after receiving a tip off.

A 33-year-old man was detained after he had overstayed his student visa and a 27-year-old who had no right to work in the UK was arrested after being questioned by Immigration Enforcement officers.

A Home Office spokesman said: “We take reports of illegal working very seriously and carry out regular operations to tackle abuse of the system.

“Illegal working cheats the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and means legitimate job seekers are denied employment opportunities. Employers who flout the rules face a heavy penalty.

“We rely on information from members of the public and I would urge people to report suspected illegal working to us.”

The raid comes 13 months after the same restaurant had seven members of staff arrested for working illegally in the UK.

Two of them were deported after the raid in March 2015. The business could face a penalty of £20,000 for each illegal worker arrested unless they can prove the proper document checks were carried out.
