Special People On Ice (SPICE) has launched a petition to 'keep ice skating alive in Slough' after a decision from Slough Borough Council to close Slough Ice Arena.

The Observer broke news last week that the council plans to close the arena in Montem Lane this autumn for a nine-month regeneration project.

The move, coupled with a decision not to provide a temporary rink during the works - the council claims it cannot justifiably offer a solution  - has left both SPICE and Slough Jets fearing for their long-term futures.

A distraught Steve English, director of operations at Slough Jets, said: "We are a unique club in the community and the impact of this decision with have a massive effect.

"The council's impact would be massive and we would not be able to operate."

A heartbroken Ricky Hodgson, chair of trustees for SPICE, added: "This is devastating news. It is a real blow. I do not know what will happen."

Now, a petition has been launched to ask the council to work with SPICE and users of its service providers, Absolutely Leisure, to find a workable and cost effective solution for the nine months whilst the ice arena is refurbished.

SPICE is aware that council budgets are tight, but argue that there is much at stake and believe Slough Borough Council should help to identify a solution.
