PRIMARY and secondary school pupils from across Bracknell Forest came together for the borough’s indoor athletics final.

Athletes from five secondary schools were put through their paces for the honour of representing the borough in the Berkshire finals.

Organised by Bracknell Forest Council’s leisure section, Bracknell Athletics Club and English Athletics, the scheme saw Garth Hill win the senior competition before the 12 qualifying junior teams took centre stage in the afternoon.

Chris Vaal, leisure development manager, said: “The teams were evenly matched from the start, although Ranelagh made a good start by winning the obstacle races, but Garth hit back in the two-lap individual races.

“Sandhurst also scored useful points on the track. The points were shared around in the remaining individual races, but Garth were really strong in winning both Paarlauf races (where two runners race together).”

Garth Hill won the overall competition 28 points ahead of second place Ranelagh, who won the senior girls’ section, with Edgbarrow rounding out the podium.

Later in the day, the 12 primary schools who finished top in the qualifying round two weeks previously took the floor.

“With terrific support from an enthusiastic crowd the primary school teams set an exceptional standard from the very first race,” said Mr Vaal. “Binfield won both hurdles relays just ahead of Sandy Lane, Whitegrove and Wooden Hill.”

Going into the final round of field events, Wooden Hill were top of the table, with Ascot Heath in second place, Binfield in third and College Town and Sandy Lane in joint fourth. Ascot Heath won the competition, with College Town in second place and Wooden Hill in third.
