EXTENSIVE work to revamp the look of Bracknell's town centre car parks and roads as part of a £240m regeneration project will start in less than two weeks.

Pedestrian bridges over The Ring will be refurbished for the first time in 25 years during the works, with the corrugated roofs removed to create more attractive gateways into The Lexicon Bracknell.

Major improvements are also planned for the facades of Princess Square and High Street car parks and the area around Charles Square will be landscaped and see cluttered street signs removed as part of the £6.25m 'greening' works.

Work is due to start on February 15 with contractor Knight Harwood enlisted on behalf of Bracknell Forest Council and Bracknell Regeneration Partnership.

Cllr Marc Brunel-Walker, executive member for economic development and regeneration, said: "We've always said that the regeneration is about providing a destination of choice for our residents and visitors, which is more than just a shopping centre.

"This plan is part of the work to create a much more impressive and enjoyable overall town centre.

"The council set aside funding for this project last year as our residents continually tell us that a thriving and modern town centre is one of their top priorities. In addition, this work will help to create a new social and cultural heart and will encourage greater economic prosperity within the borough."

The Ring is set for a major image overhaul and will be transformed into an attractive route for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Ring in its current state

While the work is ongoing The Ring will be reduced to one lane from the entrance of High Street but vehicles will still be able to access all car parks.

Simon Russian, development manager on behalf of Bracknell Regeneration Partnership, said: "The aim of the regeneration is to improve existing parts of the town centre as well as the new development, and these important works will be major part of that.

“Bracknell is surrounded by beautiful forest, and these plans will bring the essence of these areas into the town centre, creating an improved journey throughout the town.”

Grahame Roberts, director of special works at Knight Harwood says: “Knight Harwood are very proud to be involved in the Bracknell ‘Greening Works’, which will complement the regeneration of Bracknell town centre."

The works are expected to be complete by Autumn 2016 ahead of The Lexicon expected completion in spring 2017.
