SCHOOL pupils spent the day taking part in all kinds of science activities, from discovering fossils to creating colourful flames.

Year 3 pupils at Cippenham Primary School, in Elmshott Lane, Slough, enjoyed a day filled with rocks and flooding demonstrations, while Year 5 pupils at Priory School, in Orchard Avenue, Burnham, learnt all about chemistry.

Suzanne Stevens, Year 3 teacher for Lilly class at Cippenham Primary School, said: "They got to erode rocks themselves, imprint fossils into clay and watch a model demonstrate a river flood.

"'Rocks' will be the topic after half term and we organised Science Off The Page to come to engage the children in the topic before we start it."

Mrs Stevens added: "They really enjoyed it and the boys particularly enjoyed using the magnifying glasses to get a closer look."

The Priory School pupils conducted their experiments at Burnham Grammar School as part of introducing them to the bigger school and allowing some of the older students there to run the science sessions.

Carly Young, Year 5 leader, said: "The children were trying to work out what substances were in different containers - there were all different powders."

The children burnt some them on the Bunsen burner, added vinegar to them and generally had lots of fun trying to figure out the difference between sugar and salt.

She added: "The children really enjoyed using the Bunsen burners. It was really practical and they got to wear lab coats and glasses."
