AN AZAADI Mela was held on Sunday to bring the community together.

The organisers - the Slough Sikh School Trust - ran the mela on the Khalsa Primary School grounds, in Slough, as thousands turned out to enjoy a day of entertainment, despite the lashing rain.

The mela went on throughout the day and visitors were able to enjoy craft and food stores, fairground rides and entertainment live on stage from Punjabi singer Saini Surinder.

Akaal Channel TV and Asian Star Radio were both there to broadcast the event live as the annual event proves to be one of the most popular Sikh events in Berkshire.

Tavinder Singh, a volunteer from the Slough Sikh School Trust, said the event always proves successful to help bring the community together and brings an openness to all different cultures.

He said: "We generally get three to four thousand people here throughout the day, and not just Sikhs, but people of all cultures, which is what its all about.

"The biggest drawback today was the weather, but we're pleased to still see huge numbers turn out to enjoy the day here.

"It is a wonderful family fun day, where people come to get together, but there is also an educational message involved too, and that is that all cultures can come together as one family."

Khalsa Aid - who have been in operation in Slough since 1999 - were one of the main sponsors at the event, and said they were immensely proud to be a big part of the mela.

Ravinder Singh, chief executive officer for Khalsa Aid, said: "We're so proud to be based in Slough, and part of this event.

"The event is a good way for everyone to see how Sikh people live.

"Days like today can help bring positivity back to the community."
