A VILLAGE pub has been transformed into a plush and inviting eaterie after a facelift.

The Cricketers, in Cricketers Lane, Warfield, reopened to the public at the beginning of the November, inviting VIP guests for a special launch event later that month.

More than 190 guests, including Reading FC chairman Sir John Madejski, plus local businesses and villagers, toasted the future of the refurbished pub. Members of the local CAMRA branch, as well as players from Warfield Cricket Club, also attended.

New manager Stuart Roberts said: "The Cricketers has been completely transformed and we are immensely proud of it. The feedback I've been getting is that the refurb was long-overdue - all the locals have been waiting for this."

New head chef Joe Whitfield cooked up complimentary samples from the menu, alongside wine and live music from a jazz band.

Mr Roberts added: "Joe and the team have created some really special dishes and we are very grateful to everyone who came to the launch event. It was a pleasure to meet Sir John."

The renovation included radical changes to the interior - such as making ceilings higher, setting up log-burning fires and bringing in new furniture and flooring - as well as a complete overhaul of the menu, which offers premium, fresh food. A large extension now offers diners views over the countryside and, for the summer, there is a new outdoor dining space.
