Letter: Tory transport sham
AT last the Reading Tories are drip, drip, dripping their transport policies to the press.
This is presumably a desperate attempt to meet the rash statement from Cllr Willis last year that the Tories would publish their transport policy in February.
The latest wheezes include a new footbridge over the railway at Cow Lane which we can expose as something the council is already working towards with Network Rail as part of the overall scheme for Reading Station.
The Tories also have a plan for a new bus lane along London Road but omit to mention that currently the number of buses using the road – as opposed to the dedicated westbound bus lane along Kings Road – is zero!
Perhaps they really are thinking of diverting the 17 bus along London Road and then oops, across two lanes of heavy traffic in order to turn right to reach the town centre.
Can I suggest to Cllr Willis that he extend his transport horizon beyond the back of the fag packet on which these ideas were created and that if this is what his party have produced as transport policies then they have lost the plot on transport totally and Reading’s future as a polluted, clogged up town is safe in their hands.
The Lib Dems, by contrast, have produced a list of over 20 ideas for tackling congestion that they submitted to the Transport Commission at the end of last year.
