Letter: Labour’s agenda on council tax
DESPITE the self-congratulatory letters (The Chronicle, March 6) from Labour Councillors on this year’s council tax charge, they hide the fact that this year they will raid the council reserves to pull off this political stunt, 'to facilitate fluctuations in net (2008-2009) expenditure’.
As a Labour controlled local authority they also receive extra funding from a partisan Labour Government to prevent political collapse. They are worried witless about losing control of Reading in May.
Under Labour control, council tax has relentlessly risen 95.2% since 1997 and with the 2008 increase, (97.1%), middle Band D goes from £706.40 in 1997 to £1405.52 on 1st April 2008 and Band C from £627.92 to £1249.34. Factual examples of Labour’s unrelenting pressure on pensioners and those on fixed incomes. Proof they are an overtly selfish and arrogant group.
Labour’s other secret agenda is the Lyon’s Review involving future revaluing all property AFTER the elections.
Many will face increased council tax far in excess of existing bills.
Denial is impossible, as they have already implemented this dastardly revaluation in Wales and Northern Ireland. Reading’s Labour controlled Council will ensure they comply because 26% goes towards local authority pension funds.
Under Labour control, RBC has covertly applied to be one of the 10 areas in the UK to introduce road pricing. They arrogantly dismiss this charge, but nobody believes them.
They have lost our trust and lost our confidence. Hopefully, the local elections on 1st May will halt their scheming and rid us of these unaffordable 'jobs worths.’
