Bees fume at inaccurate reports
BRACKNELL Bees general manager Stuart Robinson has been left fuming with parts of the national media who incorrectly linked the Bees with an ice hockey coach jailed for having underage sex with a female player.
Nicholas Lovell was this week jailed for four-and-a-half years at Reading Crown Court after he was found guilty of five charges of sexual activity with a child who played for an ice hockey side in Bracknell.
Some parts of the national media covering the case, including The Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and Daily Telegraph, reported that Lovell, 38, was a coach with the Bees, but this was not the case.
Robinson was only alerted to the story when someone at his work pointed it out in The Daily Mail and he immediately contacted the paper to complain.
He said: “It’s upsetting to see the club’s name mentioned with something that is completely out of our hands. Mr Lovell is not and has never been a coach at the Bracknell Bees Ice Hockey Club.
“The problem is that because it’s ice hockey and people at national level have no real interest in the sport they don’t understand the difference between the Bracknell Bees Ice Hockey Club and other teams in the area.
“We’ve taken steps to contact those who have reported on it and want them to rectify their mistakes.
“The Daily Mail have removed the article from their website and I’ve asked for an apology, but I haven’t heard anything yet.”
Robinson has not ruled out taking the matter to the Press Complaints Commission if the club is not satisfied with the media’s response.
In other news from The Hive this week, Jeff Hutchins has arrived to complete Adam Bicknell’s squad for the forthcoming EPL campaign.
Hutchins, 30, is a Canadian forward who has spent the last three years in the UK playing in the Elite League for Coventry Blaze, Belfast Giants and most recently the Newcastle Vipers.
The Toronto-born star, who played in both the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League before crossing the Atlantic, notched 65 goals and 72 assists during his time in the Elite League.
Bicknell said: “I think I needed to bring in an impact import and I’m confident he is the right player. He will bring us goals that’s for sure.
“You just have to look at his numbers to see that he knows where the goal is. We want him to not just be our top scorer, but the league’s as well.
“I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen in training so far and he’s already forming a good partnership with Joe Greener which is good.”
It has also been announced that the Bees will take part in a challenge match against the Slough Jets on Wednesday, September 17 at the Slough Ice Arena.
