All women charity walk heralded as a success
Get set: Participants gather at the start line.
THE first ever women-only sunrise walk for Thames Hospicecare was a shining success.
Around 500 women of all ages and abilities rose early on Sunday morning to take part in the sponsored walk.
Among those to trek around Windsor Great Park were a team of women from Fujitsu in Bracknell, Sarah Newstead from Sandhurst and Daphne Partidge, Stella Eillis and Janey Sheeney from Crowthorne.
This was the charity’s new women-only event and organisers were overwhelmed by the numbers of women wanting to take part. An amazing £83,000 has been pledged to the Hospice by participants.
Thames Hospicecare community and events fundraiser Claire Sugg said the THc Sunrise Walk has been the hospice’s most successful fundraising event this year, and it will definitely be the first of many more to follow.
She said: “We are so grateful to all the women who registered and took part in today’s walk. The event really captured people’s imaginations - there were mums and daughters, work colleagues, friends; such a huge variety of people.
“It rained and it was a little bit windy during the walk, but the weather didn’t seem to affect the spirits of the women taking part
“We had specifically banned running from the event because we didn’t want it to be competitive, and that went down really well.
“The camaraderie and atmosphere among the walkers was wonderful; they were all so enthusiastic and encouraging of the other walkers around them.
“The big smiles on the faces of the women as they crossed the finish line confirmed what a success this event has been.”
The two-course walk consisting of a 6.5-mile or 13-mile walk started at Beaumont House Conference Centre in Old Windsor.
