READING footballers this week threw their weight behind the Chronicle’s Value for Valour campaign.

Royals stars Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle were on hand at the club’s Arborfield training ground to mark the club’s support of the campaign on behalf of troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Reading FC is offering free membership and discounted tickets to two key home games in February and fans’ favourites Hunt and Doyle were pleased to back the campaign on behalf of the club.

Club spokesman Simon Heggie said: “All the players are really pleased that we can do something to show our thanks in this way.

“The armed forces do a great job at home and abroad and it would be great to have them at the stadium to cheer us on.”

Time has now run out to take advantage of the ticket offer for Saturday’s game against Bolton at the Madejski Stadium, but anyone with an MOD 90 ID card who is living or based in Berkshire can buy discounted tickets for the home game against Aston Villa on February 23.

Tickets must be purchased in person from the Madejski Stadium ticket office by the Wednesday prior to the match.

Captain Dan Paris, who is based at Arborfield Garrison, said: “We’re very grateful to Reading that our efforts overseas are being recognised because sometimes it can take time to re-adjust when you return.

“I know a lot of the troops in Berkshire will be Reading fans so it’s a great offer for them and I hope they enjoy it.”

Value for Valour is a campaign to encourage leisure venues in Berkshire to offer discounts to military servicemen and women returning from conflict zones around the world.

I love the idea of this campaign. Whether or not you agree with our troops going out to conflict zones like Iraq and Afghanistan you can't deny that the servicemen and women do a great job in horrible circumstances. Ross Kemp's Afghanistan documentaries show how difficult it is. Anything we can do to show our appreciation is great.
